One Woman: New Digs/Dig In

June 6, 2026

This is the new patio area.

The last time we went to One Woman Winery, the tasting room was a charmingly ramshackle shack, with room for about five people inside, and a few more groups, weather permitting, on the outside deck and grounds.  But I had heard that they had a lovely new tasting room, in a new building, so I was eager to check it out.  The perfect occasion presented itself when out-of-town visitors arrived and agreed that going to Horton Point Lighthouse sounded interesting.  One Woman is just a short distance east on Sound Avenue from Horton Point, so off we went.

Continuing the theme of the history of the area, here is the history of this winery!

Horton Point is worth a visit itself, with its quirky little museum detailing some of the maritime history of the area, though unfortunately our guests could not climb the tower, as the Coast Guard person who needs to escort visitors had not yet arrived.  But we enjoyed the enthusiasm of the volunteer docents, who have a wealth of information to share.

Then it was on to One Woman.  We parked, and walked up to a lovely patio area, where a friendly young woman greeted us, and escorted us to a table, quickly supplying us with menus and a bottle of cold water.  We all immediately went for the water, which was, really, quite good.  “It’s filtered well water,” our server explained, “from a well on the property.”

Then it was time to peruse the menu, which offered everything from flights to wines by the glass or bottle to cocktails to beers, plus a few non-alcoholic choices.  Whew.  My husband and I decided to share a “Bestseller’s” Flight, of four wines for $25, while our company opted for the “Build Your Own” option, of any four wines for $35.

These are just some of the pages of options. I’d love to come back and try their cocktails.

While planning this excursion, I realized we would be at One Woman at lunch time, so I emailed them to see if they had snacks available.  They promptly emailed back that they had cheese, charcuterie, and tinned fish.  Tinned fish!  That laconic mention hardly encompasses the multi-page list of tinned fish their menu sports.  We enlisted the help of one of our enthusiastic servers, and settled on a tin of “small sardines in tomato” and another of “bay scallops in spicy olive oil.”  We enjoyed both selections, which came with slices of baguette and cornichons, especially the scallops.  I did note that it was good that we had tasted most of the wines before starting on the scallops, as they were quite spicy.  (The tins vary in price from $10 to $24.) One guest loved them so much, she bought I-don’t-know-how-many tins to take home, plus two bottles of the Gewürztraminer. What I only realized when I went inside the building was that they also have a bakery counter with freshly made pastries, plus a retail shop.  Quite a change!

These are just two of the many pages of tinned fish options.
Fish for sale!
Our servers–who took very good care of us.

While chatting with our servers, I asked about a rumor I had heard that Claudia Purita—the woman behind One Woman—was thinking of selling.  I was reassured that no, that was not correct, she was just looking for new investors.  Since I like her wines, I was glad to hear that.

As we sipped and munched, we enjoyed the calm atmosphere and the quiet guitar music in the background. We definitely need to go back!

Our flight, with the wines clearly labeled and numbered in the order in which to taste them.

Bestseller’s Flight

  1. 2023 Sauvignon blanc  $25 This is a lovely, light, clean-tasting SB, with a pineapple aroma and taste, plus green apple and a bit of spice.  Definitely an oyster wine, we agreed.
  2. 2024 Grüner Veltliner    $25 Out of all the white wines on the North Fork, I have a few favorites, and this is one of them.  It’s just a tasty, easy to drink, white, and has a lemony taste that pairs well with all sorts of seafood. My brother observed that it “wants food,” and I agree.
  3. 2019 Chardonnay          $25 I don’t always like chardonnays, but this one is nice; it is mellow, smelling a bit like applesauce.  It is aged 60% in steel and 30% in French oak, we are told (What about the remaining 10% I forget to ask.), which is why it is softer than an all-steel chard. There’s a bit of a pepper edge at the end.
  4. 2016 Merlot                      $25 Like most North Fork merlots, this is very cherry, both in aroma and taste, with a dry finish.  We like it, and, when we compare it to the Reserve Merlot in our guests’ flight, we prefer it to its more expensive cousin.
It’s a fairly generous pour.
Sardines!

Build Your Own Flight

Scallops!
  1. 2024 Pinot Noir Rosé    (On Tap) A sparkling wine is a lovely way to start a tasting, and this one does not disappoint.  It has the expected strawberry taste and aroma, plus a hint of pineapple, and it fizzes pleasantly on the tongue.  Refreshing! Our guests like it so much, they want to buy a bottle, but are told it is not available, and can only be tasted by the glass, since it is on tap.  Why?  Because of the tariffs, the proper bottles and closers were not available for this type of wine.
  2. 2022 Gewürztraminer                  $28 “It smells likes grapes,” jokes my brother, and we get into that always fascinating topic of the mystery of a liquid made from grapes that can taste like strawberries, pears, apples, blackberries, etc., not to mention tobacco and pencil shavings and minerals. We like this wine as well, and we agree that all the wines have a clean, forthright quality we enjoy.
  3. 2024 Reserve Grûner Veltliner                $32 Oops.  A wine I don’t like.  This has been aged in oak, and we agree it is too oaky. We much prefer the other Grûner.
  4. 2014 Reserve Merlot     $45 Hmm.  Another wine where we prefer the non-reserve to the reserve.  Nothing is wrong with this merlot, with its cherry taste and edge of oak, we just like the other merlot better.

Reasons to visit: beautiful new surroundings, from the breezy outdoor area to the elegant tasting room; all the wines except, for me, the Reserve Grüner, but especially the regular Grüner Veltliner, the Pinot Noir Rosé, and the Gewürztraminer; tinned fish!!!  Oh, and because we both got full tastings, we were offered an additional taste.  I had the Gewürztraminer and our guests had more of the Rosé.
